Orchid Dividing Time
Well it's not actually dividing time, I started that in late August this year, seems like because we had such a mild winter the orchids wanted to get going early so I started dividing early. Now I'm a big believer in waiting to see green tips on the roots before I start, and yes some start active growth early and others later, Ive found in our climate and after our usual harsh winters here the hybrids always start towards the end of winter into mid September, years ago it use to be mid to late September, and my species start mid October to early November. Ive posted a few pics in the blog, first couple are of a big hybrid I divided late August it had 70 or so canes in top condition, but just too big, I like to use the anti spiral pots for repotting my big babys, you can get them Online from Sage Horticultural, bit expensive but well worth it, now the reason I use these is they make for dividing the plant at a later stage so much easier, the roots head to the bottom and the damage done to the plant when dividing is minimised, I also use these webbed pots because they keep the roots drier, you can get a lot of root rot here if you don't keep the big fellas root zone dry over winter, I seldom water the big fellas from May through to August for that reason, there's more than enough humidity in the air for them. Once I divide the plant I trim any manky roots but I don't go crazy, I pot up into a nice clean mix of 4 parts hard bark, 4 parts scoria and 2 parts charcoal I soak it in water for at least 24hrs and longer at times, now another thing I do is sanitize sanitize sanitize, I use a product called Benzalkonium Chloride or BAC 50% available online, I use a 0.5% solution to soak my potting mix before use and I don't rinse all my potting benches and tools are cleaned and soaked in this stuff too, remember you just cut the guts out of the orchid, exposed its core to every imaginable pathogen so now to put it into some dirty old bark thats been stewing in the Garden Centre for 5 months makes no sense! If you intend using this stuff make sure you follow all the safety info, you can buy a less strong version from the Pool shop which is much safer to handle , I also add one or two Confidor tablets to just sit under the root ball (available in my online shop), a trick that came from AON and it works a treat at keeping mealy bugs, scale and Im sure other pests at bay plus its got a bit of fertiliser in it. Once potted, a sprinkle of native type controlled release fertiliser and a 50/50 mix of blood and bone with hydrated lime, a trick learnt from the old blokes, it works a treat! Few of the last pics will show what was potted up last year, roots pushing out of pots and nice big fat canes coming through just a treat to see! After 12months most of them are well established and looking for a new home. So when you buy one of my big divisions, potted up and ready to go you can be assured its had the best care possible in reducing the risk of pathogens, disease and bugs! Happy Orchiding Evereyone
